God Is Still My Co Pilot
Published in Hardcover by Beachcomber Books (June, 1967)
Author: Robert L. Scott
Average review score:

Early WWII Best Seller Remains A Timeless Classic
God is My Copilot
by Robert L. Scott
Original Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1943
This early wartime best seller brought hope to America in the early days of the Pacific war after a grim string of defeats extending from Pearl Harbor, Wake Island to Bataan. Told through the first hand experiences of ace Robert L. Scott, ultimate victory was never in doubt. For generations of readers, it is the classic story the Flying Tiger's shark-faced P-40s, the brilliant tactics and leadership of General Claire Chennault, and victorious outnumbered American fighter pilots who out-flew and out-fought the opposition. This book belongs in every serious aviation library.

Gen Scott tells it like it is...again!
God is Still my Co-pilot was first eluded to in the introduction to God is my Co-pilot, back in '42, and finally made it to press in 67.This book was dedicated to Gen Scott's mother, who was the source of his drive and determination to make something of himself and of his life. He has suceeded in more than a million ways, obviously! This book is very good reading and details Gen Scott's life in the 50s and early 60s, when this country was outdone by russia in the space race and when our politicians got us into a war we couldnt possibly when. Gen Scott lets the reader know exactly what he thinks in a lot of politically "incorrect" areas, which we can do today, but in 67 it was strictly taboo, preventing him from getting the book published in the traditional manner, subsequently having to get patrons involved. We have Robert "Strange" Mcnamara to thank, the Secretary of Defense at the time. This is a very good book and i recommend it highly to anybody ! interested!

Golf for the Fun of It: Enjoy Your Game No Matter What the Score
Published in Paperback by Madrone Press (10 August, 2001)
Authors: Michael Holstein and Scott English
Average review score:

FUN book!
Really a great book -- I would definitely recommend purchasing this. Wonderful pictures and thoughtful, interesting writing. A new and worthwhile slant on golf.

Refreshing idea, and great gift!
I bought this for my dad for christmas but ended up keeping it for myself... Unlike all other golf books, this one isn't trying to improve your swing, but instead improve your enjoyment of the game. The pressure to perform like Tiger makes many of us forget to enjoy the game for its recreational value and the pleasure of being outdoors. The book encourages golfers to forget their score and concentrate on those things that have made golf such a popular sport.

I especially liked all the old photographs, postcards, and golf history spread throughout the book; it makes it fun for even non-golfers (my wife!). The book is a refreshing look at golf. The authors have a good sense of humor, and a love of the game. Would definitely recommend it.

The Good Earth: Three Poets of the Prairie

The Elders Speak-Three Poets of the Prairie
Excerpts from the Wapsipincon Review (2002/03 issue), book reviewed by Floyd Pearce. "This book is an excellent sampler and, for many, could provide an introduction to these distinquished poets. You don't read poetry? Try these poets! If you are as tired as I am of swagger and irony a la mode of so many modern poets, welcome to the farm."

Additional Information From Publisher
This book features the poetry of Paul Engle (Robert Dana), William Stafford (Denise Low) and James Hearst (Scott Cawelti) with a foreword by Iowa farm poet Michael Carey. This book is a companion edition to the 5th Harvest Lecture held October 17th, 2002 which dealt with poetry, landscape and popular spirituality.

Grasping God's Word
Published in Hardcover by Zondervan (01 August, 2001)
Authors: J. Scott Duvall and J. Daniel Hays
Average review score:

A great introductory work
This book is a giant leap forward in beginning exegesis. It opens a world of possibilities for the beginning student as well as serving as a great review for experienced interpreters. The book is delightfully written, and prayerfully organized. I can't imagine a better book to begin the interpretive journey. While written with college students in mind, anyone who is serious about grasping God's word will find it very helpful!

Finally! An intermediate level hermeneutics book.
For a long time the only books available for those interested in Bible study methodology have fallen into two general categories. There were those written more at the popular level (ie. Kay Arthur's Inductive method, Tim LaHaye's How to Study the Bible, etc...); or those that were more technical (Osborne's Hermeneutical Spiral, Vanhoozer's Is There a Meaning in this Text, etc...). However, there has been no real attempt to weave these two types together; an easily readable text that doesn't betray the Spiritual aspect of Bible Study, while at the same time teaching the standard methods of interpretation. Fee and Stuart took a huge step that way with How to Read the Bible for All it's Worth; I submit that their intentions were perfected by Duvall and Hays in this book. Here is a book that can teach college students, seminarians, and even laypeople the correct methods of hermeneutics for every genre in the Bible. At the same time, it remains light and sometimes even funny. I can't imagine there being a more perfect book for those that are interested in truly Grasping God's Word.

Great Writers & Kids Write Mystery Stories (Great Writers & Kids Anthologies)
Published in Paperback by Random House (Merchandising) (January, 1997)
Authors: Martin H. Greenberg, Jill M. Morgan, Robert E. Weinberg, Scott Turow, Joan Lowery Nixon, Sharyn McCrumb, Wendy Hornsby, Stuart M. Kaminsky, Barbara D'Amato, and Max Allan Collins
Average review score:

A BOOK TO BE TREASURED BY ADULTS AND CHILDREN.
This is a wonderful anthology. Top-notch mystery writers and their children (and, in some cases, grandchildren) collaborated on a variety of entertaining stories.

Pay particular attention to "Releve", the story contributed by Patricia Wallace and her daughter. This story introduces us to Sydney Bryant, the private eye that Pat Wallace has featured in a terrific series for adults. The titles in the series include "Deadly Devotion" and "Blood Lies".

Other outstanding stories include those by Wendy Hornsby, Scott Turow, Stuart Kaminsky, and Sharyn McCrumb (and their collaborators). This is a book that parents can read and enjoy with their children. It might inspire them to collaborate on some mystery stories of their own!

I look forward to reading the companion volume, "Great Writers and Kids Write Spooky Stories". I

mini-lesson on mystery writing

"When you think of a mystery, what comes to mind? A dark secret? An unsolved crime? A curious detective hunting for clues?"

The only mystery, the only secret, the only crime is how this anthology could be so easily overlooked. "Great Writers and Kids Write Mystery Stories" (1996) is a collection of stories written by some of today's greatest mystery authors in collaboration with their children and grandchildren. Jonathan Kellerman, Sharyn McCrumb, and Scott Turow are three of the thirteen award-winning writers that create wonderous whodunits with their offspring, ages 6 to adult.

While written at about the junior high/ middle school level, this complilation is enjoyable to all. The stories are five to several pages. Some are written with the child as the amateur detective, some are written as a type of psychological thriller.

The introduction serves as a "mini-lesson" on mystery writing. And, each story features a short personal introduction by the adult and child writing team on what it was like to collaborate on their included story. Other contributors include Barbara D'Amato, Ed Gorman, Stuart Kaminsky, Elizabeth Engstrom, and many others.

This book has the unique ability to be educational as well as entertaining. Those that enjoy this book may also enjoy the first volume as well: "Great Writers and Kids Write Spooky Stories" (1995).
